A glamourous Indonesian couple came all the way to France to experience the charm of Parisian festivities with 100 of their closest friends and family. The exquisite Bride came packing 6 different gowns for the 3 days of events that started with a welcome lunch on a festive yacht, followed by a classic garden wedding ceremony and an elegant movie-like reception, all topped off with a rockin dance party.
 
One of the best things about planning weddings for international couples in France is that we get to discover new traditions and cultures through the events we plan. This couple had a fun tradition from their home country, which was based around the idea that the Groom had to “earn” the right to see his Bride by doing dares before the ceremony. Since the dares could get messy (involving eating pie on all fours with no hands, for example) it was the Groomsmen that had to accomplish the tasks that got the Groom closer to his Bride with each challenge met. The Pavilion we had rented had 4 separate adjoining rooms, and the Groom remained blindfolded as the Bridesmaids had the Groomsmen take each dare, in order to pass into the next room. In the last salon sat the Bride on a gorgeous chaise lounge surrounded by candles & flowers, and the Groom got to see her and steal a kiss before the ceremony.
 
Incorporating the couple’s traditions in a French setting makes each event unique and personal, and a lot of fun to plan!!

Since 1999, same-sex couples in France have had the option to get PACSed, which is a French civil union, however this union can be made between any two adults who wish to organize their lives together. It brings rights, responsibilities and tax benefits, but less so than a marriage, and is only legally recognized in France. In February, the French government voted on the same-sex marriage bill and it passed by 69%, the first step towards legalizing gay marriage and adoption in France. The bill was then approved in late April, therefore legalizing gay marriage and making them the 14th country in Europe to do so! The president just has to now sign it into law and same sex marriages could be legal as soon as next month.
 

Last Saturday, only 4 days after the final vote, Paris hosted their very first gay marriage trade show. Inside, gay couples browsed through a variety of vendors that showed what they had to offer to this new wedding market. Guests were first welcomed with a glass of champagne, then given the chance to taste caterers’ menus, browse for wedding bands, photographers, and wedding attire designers. Basically your typical wedding trade show — only this time completely gay-friendly.

Another major priority for this couple was the overall comfort and pleasure of their guests. They hoped for memorable, show-stopping moments for their family and friends. With a ceremony overlooking the vast Provençal gardens and vineyards followed by a sunset cocktail enjoyed to the tune of instrumental versions of modern music played on an electric violin, and culminating with a high-energy grand entrance of the couple into the reception, each moment of the evening brought the guests higher and higher into an atmosphere of excitement.

During the seated dinner, held in the chateau’s inner-courtyard, we purposely cut the lights and sound several times, mimicking some “technical difficulties” in order to add a sense of drama and tension leading up to the reception’s most fabulous surprise.   After the cutting of the cake (a very tall croquembouche with golden sparklers), we created one more “black out” when suddenly a gorgeous spot-lit singer appeared seated on a window ledge overlooking the reception.   As she belted the opening strains to “Good Feeling,”  the guests were enthralled and inspired to rush to the dancefloor, where they spent the next several hours enjoying the rhythmic beats of a live bongo drum player, the singing diva, and one of the South of France’s hottest DJs.

See Maria and Jack’s wedding featured on Style Me Pretty

As this is a challenge I have been facing a lot with recent weddings, I was particularly intrigued by this year’s modern art exposition at Versailles. In past years Versailles has featured the art of Jeff Koons, Takashi Murkami, and Xavier Veilhan and Bernar Venet. This years featured artist is Joana Vasconcelos who’s modern works now stand amongst the beauty of the Versailles gardens and within Versailles’ walls. Below are some photos of some of her work:

Off all the numerous pieces of art Joana Vasconcelos has displayed at Versailles, I felt that these three best showcased a utilization of this historic setting as a means to emphasize the beauty of the art. When looking at these pieces I do not find myself trying to block out the views of Versailles in the background, but instead, look at the art as a continuation of the already gorgeous setting.  Mixing modern and traditional styles is possible and can be done in a tasteful manner! Attention to cohesive aspects such as color, size, and light can unify otherwise contradictory styles.
